Description: The Alaska Initiative for Community Engagement (Alaska ICE) provides Alaskans at the local school district level the information, tools and assistance to work together and engage in the shared responsibility of preparing Alaska's children and youth for the future through asset building and community engagement. Alaska ICE works with many of the 53 school districts throughout the state, assisting nine selected school districts each year with a comprehensive approach to school improvement, focusing on the four areas of leadership, programs and staff, community engagement and resources.

Citation Excerpt: Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965, as amended, Title VII, Part C. SEC. 7304. PROGRAM AUTHORIZED. (a) GENERAL AUTHORITY. (1) GRANTS AND CONTRACTS- The Secretary is authorized to make grants to, or enter into contracts with, Alaska Native organizations, educational entities with experience in developing or operating Alaska Native programs or programs of instruction conducted in Alaska Native languages, cultural and community-based organizations with experience in developing or operating programs to benefit Alaska Natives, and consortia of organizations and entities described in this paragraph to carry out programs that meet the purposes of this part. (2) PERMISSIBLE ACTIVITIES- (Q) An Alaska Initiative for Community Engagement program. (d) AUTHORIZATION OF APPROPRIATIONS. (2) AVAILABILITY OF FUNDS- Of the funds appropriated and made available under this section for a fiscal year, the Secretary shall make available? (E) not less than $2,000,000 to support activities described in subsection (a)(2)(Q). FY 2005 Appropriations conference report (H. Rept. 108-792): The conference agreement includes $34,500,000 for the Alaska Native Educational Equity program.
