Description: The Heritage Center is an educational institution dedicated to providing rich interactive experiences for the general public to learn about Alaska's indigenous heritage through a variety of programs designed for an international audience. The Center provides accurate, culturally appropriate and educationally sound learning opportunities for children, adults and families on all aspects of Alaska Native history, cultures and arts, with a variety of classes, programs, exhibits, performances and published materials. The Center's programs are designed to increase awareness among Native students and adults, promote cultural pride, and improve appreciation of diversity, awareness and communication among all Alaskans. The educational programs include school visits, school outreach, high school program (after school cultural and academic support), winter weekend, master arts mentoring, multimedia heritage resource library, cultural awareness workshops, summer cultural training program, and annual theme program.

Citation Excerpt: Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965, as amended, Title VII, Part C. SEC. 7304. PROGRAM AUTHORIZED. (a) GENERAL AUTHORITY (1) GRANTS AND CONTRACTS- The Secretary is authorized to make grants to, or enter into contracts with, Alaska Native organizations, educational entities with experience in developing or operating Alaska Native programs or programs of instruction conducted in Alaska Native languages, cultural and community-based organizations with experience in developing or operating programs to benefit Alaska Natives, and consortia of organizations and entities described in this paragraph to carry out programs that meet the purposes of this part. (2) PERMISSIBLE ACTIVITIES- (L) Cultural education programs operated by the Alaska Native Heritage Center and designed to share the Alaska Native culture with students. (d) AUTHORIZATION OF APPROPRIATIONS- (2) AVAILABILITY OF FUNDS- Of the funds appropriated and made available under this section for a fiscal year, the Secretary shall make available? (B) not less than $1,000,000 to support activities described in subsection (a)(2)(L). H. Rept. 108-792: The conference agreement includes $34,500,000 for the Alaska Native Educational Equity program.
