Description: A ballute is a hybrid balloon-parachute device for generating high drag and vehicle deceleration. Recent government and academic research has focused using ballutes for planetary entry applications. Technology issues under investigation include: optimal ballute configuration, ballute survivability, aerodynamic characterization, system mass, trajectory robustness, deployment and inflation, and experimental verification.
