Tungsten Penetrator

1 recipient will receive $2,689,000. This is a first-time earmark.
Year Enacted: 2005
Description: Tungsten Penetrator: Develop single crystal tungsten kinetic energy penetrators for anti-armor applications as a replacement for Depleted Uranium (DU) ammunition. The Single Crystal Tungsten Penetrator Program has the potential of demonstrating improved Tungsten-Alloy penetrator performance. The hardest problem to overcome remains the ability to produce cores of sufficient size to use in current legacy production items that is both cost effective and can be made in a timely manner. To date the program has demonstrated an ability to produce 1/4-scale parts for preliminary assessments at the Army's Research Laboratory (ARL).
