Comprehensive Medical Imaging Research

1 recipient will receive $6,612,000. This is a first-time earmark.
Year Enacted: 2005
Description: The goal of this project is to acquire and implement the usage of a new 7 Tesla (7T) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) spectrometer as a tool to investigate skeletal muscle metabolism in obesity and diabetes. The objective is human clinical research studies in metabolism on a 7 Tesla MR system. The hypothesis to test is that abnormal intracellular fat stores and insulin resistance are caused by a disorder of mitochondrial oxidative functions. This project will enhance spatial and temporal resolution and aid understanding of intermediary metabolism in humans. The project will attempt to determine whether dysfunction of skeletal muscle mitochondria causes skeletal muscle insulin resistance and whether this correlates with abnormal hepatic glucose production among patients with insulin-dependent type 2 diabetes.
