Operating Room of the Future

1 recipient will receive $3,833,000. This is a continuing earmark.
Year Enacted: 2005
Description: This proposal represents the culmination of three years of previous work designed to address issues related to an enhanced and safer operating room environment. To achieve the desired OR environment, they will study the functions and interactions of people, processes and technology that produce a safe and efficient operating suite. The first pillar of their project is surgical simulation through the development of a (cognitive) simulator and building knowledge representations based on ontology of focused human anatomy/physiology to emulate the surgical/clinical experience. The second pillar is entitled ?Smart Image? in which they are seeking to push the boundaries of real time deformable image registration with a goal of performing the first fully ?Smart image guided laparoscopy? procedure. The third pillar pertains to surgical informatics and focuses upon the processes that surround the perioperative environment. They will create a ?quality matrix? to render operations management transparent. A key factor in this effort will be the deployment of sensor networks (RFID) to measure and model workflow in the surgical milieu.
