Automated Medical Emergency Intravascular Access (AuthCath)

1 recipient will receive $957,000. This is a first-time earmark.
Year Enacted: 2005
Description: The Smart Aortic Arch Catheter (SmartCath) program seeks to develop prototype sensor containing 'smart' catheters for assisted emergency catheter placement in the aortic arch, via a transthoracic approach, for rapid targeted delivery of cold solutions to brain, heart and spinal cord. The delivery of cold flush solutions will induce profound hypothermia and vital organ preservation following severe traumatic injuries and massive hemorrhage leading to cardiac arrest, in order to extend the time during which evacuation may occur from remote locations and definitive surgical repairs are accomplished. The SmartCath program encompasses stepwise design and development of SmartCath components for vascular imaging, trocar insertion, catheter placement, cold flush connections, and monitoring of hypothermia by first responders in the field.
