Synchrotron-Based Scanning Research (N: $6.5 million only continue SB tech enhancement for scanning of breast & lung cancer patients & diagnostic dev to maximize SB proton therapy & $2 million for continued mass-causality accident center demo)

1 recipient will receive $8,144,000. This is a continuing earmark.
Year Enacted: 2005
Description: The purpose of `Year/Phase IV (ongoing)` of this program is to extend the capability of proton beam treatment from applications (small- and medium-sized target volumes) to large, irregular target volumes. This task cannot be achieved without first developing sophisticated scanning beam technology capable of routine use in a hospital setting. B) To maximize the precision of ionization within large, irregularly shaped volumes, a spatially dynamic beam delivery system will developed that actively `paints` the proton beam throughout the target volume.
