Scramjet Powered Munitions for Future Combat System

1 recipient will receive $958,000. This is a first-time earmark.
Year Enacted: 2005
Description: Scramjet Powered Munitions for Future Combat System: Scramjet (Supersonic Combustion Ramjet) propulsion is an enabling hypersonic propulsion technology with a broad range of potential applications to gun launched projectiles. As such, it would provide increased range, increased lethality, and decreased time of flight to the target, as currently required for the FCS LOS, BLOS, and NLOS systems. A scramjet engine operates in the supersonic and hypersonic flight regimes (typically Machs 5 to 8), and can produce thrust 2 to 5 times more efficiently than a rocket motor. This money would be used to modify a previously tested 101mm projectile design, build, and test fire a 120mm operational engine to obtain atmospheric free flight performance data.
