Minimally Invasive Surgical Technology Institute (MISTI) (Note: only to continue the ongoing CSMC Program)

1 recipient will receive $2,897,000. This is a continuing earmark.
Year Enacted: 2005
Description: Develop methodologies to reduce medical error and improve patient safety in the clinical environment through the use of novel technologies and training tools. CSMC proposes a five-pronged approach: 1) develop tools (database, web-based processes, learning-monitoring system) to enhance the training of surgical residents in medical complications; 2) develop a system to assess surgical performance, capturing all the salient features of an operation and subsequent critical care (e.g., technology level, equipment design and use, communication, team coordination, factors affecting individual performance, and the working environment); 3) establish a comprehensive simulation laboratory for training of surgical residents in state-of-the-art video-assisted surgery techniques; 4) implement a high-quality telemedicine capability, adding new communications options (e.g. wearable PDA-type), better linking diagnosis (e.g. pathology) and treatment (e.g. surgery) in time and space, and using harmless infraredIR-labels for embedded in situ diagnostic monitoring; 5) improve resource management in the critical care settingsOperating Room, by designing and implementing an advanced tracking system to account for the location of any clinically important movable asset in the ORoperating room and intensive care unitICU settings.
