Description: To continue this multidisciplinary effort, utilizing the expertise in education, research and clinical trials that are found at the Hershey Medical Center of the Pennsylvania State University. The effort will center on education, treatment, early detection and prevention of cancer. A multidisciplinary clinical center of excellence will be established at the Pennsylvania State University in collaboration with the Hershey Medical Center that utilizes state of the art facilities for the diagnosis and long-term management of patients with cancer. These efforts will vastly expand the proven and complementary early detection systems of cancer, making access to this technology easily available to a broader spectrum of the population at risk. Congressional funds (1.1M) are appropriated to support Naval Health Research Center ' San Diego in the establishment and assembly of a comprehensive program, including UCSD School of Medicine and the UCSD Cancer Center, the National Academy of Science' Institute of Medicine, and various other facilities to determine the relationship of vitamin D status to colon, breast, and prostate cancer. Program initiatives will include development of research designs and methods that could be used to perform transitional research, as well-defined preventative recommendations for maintaining vitamin D intake and serum levels in men and women in the Armed Services that would provide optimal control of these disorders and thereby, enhance warfighter readiness.
