Description: Funding was provided to acquire 127 tracts containing a total of 5,870 acres at the national preserve. Twenty eight of the tracts are located in a designated wilderness portion of the preserve where there was an ongoing problem with off-road vehicles damaging sand dunes and destroying existing vegetation. The other 99 tracts contain critical desert tortoise habitat that is threatened by development proposals.
