Description: The Act of October 3, 1980 designated the trail as a portion of the National Trails System. From FY 2000 through FY 2004, funds in the amount of $8,960,000 have been included in the NPS appropriation for Federal land acquisition to acquire an interpretive site for the trail and to grant funds to the State of Wisconsin for land acquisition for the trail. The funds added by the Senate Committee would, if appropriated, be granted to the State of Wisconsin to acquire land for the trail near Milwaukee. Some matching State funds were provided.
