Description: Funding was provided to support the Native Hawaiian Culture and Arts Program (NHCAP), which was created to provide a greater sense of cultural awareness and ethnic pride essential to the survival of the Native Hawaiian people. The NHCAP was established in 1987 to revive cultural and artistic practices which were on the verge of extinction. Through the Bishop Museum, the NHCAP's efforts are devoted to establishing, expanding and providing cooperatively supported cultural learning centers on each of the islands of Hawaii at sites of cultural and historic significance to Native Hawaiians. The centers' educational programs focus on Native Hawaiian traditions, arts and language and serve to fulfill the NHCAP's mission to disseminate the cultural research that has been completed by the program. The four learning centers have served more than 200,000 students, more than 1,000 teachers, and more than a million visitors who have attended special events, daily site visits and programs and benefited from broadcasts of NHCAP sponsored films, publications, CDs and materials made available through the website of the Bishop Museum. Research materials and data are available to the public through the website as well as digital archival information such as old newspapers and translations of Hawaiian language texts.
