Description: Essex National Heritage Area preserves and interprets three themes of national significance to American History: Early Settlement and the first contact between native peoples and colonists (17th-century); Great Age of Sail and America's rise as an international trading power (18th and 19th-centuries); Industrial Revolution with an emphasis on textile and shoe manufacturing and the birth of the labor movement (19th and 20th-centuries). Funding was provided to expand the Explorers program, update and maintain an on-line 'Educators Resource Guide,' continue to develop the Partnership Grant Program in the areas of education, preservation and interpretation, continue to improve the outreach for historic and cultural sites, continue to support the network of regional visitor centers through staff and volunteer training and grant funding, and conclude the first phase of the area-wide Heritage Landscape Inventory.
