Description: The Service was directed to include funding for hemlock woolly adelgid control at Great Smoky Mountains National Park from within the amounts provided for park operations. The hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA) is a non-native insect that had infested eastern hemlock in the park since 2002. As a result of HWA feeding, hemlocks can lose needles within two years of initial infestation and mortality can occur in three to five years.
