Description: This grant supports purchase of an functional MRI (fMRI) system so that faculty and and students in the cognitive neuroscience program at the University of Oregon (UO) can acceess this powerful new technique. The facility will be employed in investigating the brain systems and mechanisms important in selecting, localizing, and attending to particular events in complex, ecologically valid, auditory environments, the processing cascade involved in transforming visual signals into veridical perceptions and concious experience, systems inportant for motor control, sensory- motor integration and learning, and other basic studies. A Unique feature of this research with MRI is integration of its high spatial resolution with high temporal resolution of state-of-the-art electrophysiological recordings from humans and with the very high spatial and temporal resolution of single unti studies in non-humans, in which UO has unique research strengths.
