President Bush Extends Condolences Upon Death of Former President of Estonia Lennart Meri

The President sends his condolences and utmost respect to the Estonian nation on the death of President Lennart Meri. In his pursuit of freedom, President Meri was a pioneering statesman, an eloquent spokesman, and a proud voice for a country reclaiming its rightful place in the world community of nations. His leadership, convictions, and courage earned him the love of the Estonian nation and the admiration of the world.

A seminal figure in the struggle for freedom, President Meri provided a moral compass to the Estonian people, ably leading them through the challenges that faced an Estonian republic that regained independence after a half-century of oppression. President Meri was a steadfast, strong friend whom we will miss. The American nation mourns with Estonia and our heartfelt sympathies are with all Estonians during this time of loss.
