Exchange Students Observe American Election

Exchange students from across the Middle East, Eastern Europe, and Asia spent Election Day observing American democracy in action. Thirty-three high-school exchange students from 16 countries -- including Afghanistan, Belarus, the Philippines, and Yemen -- participated in an Election Day visit that included a State Department briefing about the United States electoral process and a trip to a local polling station. The election day activities were the culmination of several months of watching the presidential debates and following the campaign. The election gave these teenagers -- many of them coming from countries that are only recently holding elections -- an opportunity to observe and understand American democracy.
