Indonesia Holds Landmark Election
Fact of the Day

Indonesia successfully conducted its first-ever direct presidential election. The election was the largest single-day direct election in the world and demonstrates the Indonesian people's continued commitment to democracy. In addition to providing aid for the historic election, the United States deployed 60 official observers who described significant improvements in electoral logistics and found that the voting process was both transparent and unbiased. As the world's largest Muslim-majority country, Indonesia's successful presidential election is a strong reminder that there are successful democracies in the Muslim world.
