Top Iraqi Generals Appointed
Iraq Fact of the Day

The new Iraqi armed forces will protect all the people of Iraq. Interim Minister of Defense Allawi announced the appointment of the three top generals: the senior military advisor is a Kurd; the armed forces chief of staff is a Sunni Arab; and the deputy chief of staff is a Shia Arab. These three generals are charged with leading their troops while they provide security for all Iraqis, regardless of gender, ethnicity or religion. This is a dramatic change from a time when the armed forces existed to protect and serve the interests of Saddam Hussein.
