Baghdad's New Mayor
Iraq Fact of the Day

Members of the Baghdad city and district councils selected a new mayor earlier this week. A selection committee chose eight candidates from a pool of 93 applicants - thanks to a highly successful local media publicity campaign. Dr. Alaa Mahmood al-Tamini, a 52-year-old engineer, won Baghdad's top job. The city and district councils' selection of a mayor is a key step toward establishing a democratic, transparent local government in Iraq's capital city.
