Global Message

From remarks by NSA Rice to the press corps, Bangkok, 10/20/03

We are having good effect in getting countries to be involved in the reconstruction of Iraq. We have more than 30 countries now involved on the ground, with more to follow.

The UN Security Council resolution has given us new impetus because it provides a sense that the international community is coming together around the proposition that Iraq must be stable and prosperous and on a democratic path.

We believe that we are going to get very good cooperation and very good support from the Madrid Donors' Conference. But the important thing is that countries are starting to step forward with their contributions.

The Japanese have stepped forward with a large contribution; the South Koreans and others. I think you're going to start to see quite a bit of support for the reconstruction. People want Iraq to succeed.
