KEY POINTS: MIDDLE EAST PEACE

From Secretary of State Powell's remarks in Cambodia, 6/18/03

  • Both Israeli and Palestinian leaders realize that they can't allow a wave of terrorism to stand in the way of progress on the Road Map.

  • The fact that Palestinian Prime Minister Abbas and the Israeli security authorities are talking about a handover in Gaza and talking seriously is progress, but that progress has not yet culminated in an agreement.

  • As we continue implementing the Road Map, the U.S. will work very hard with our partners in the region, in the European Union and elsewhere to add to the capacity of the Palestinian Authority so that they can increase their reach in Gaza and ultimately to the West Bank communities as well.
