President Outlines the Next Stage in Welfare Reform
President George W. Bush discusses welfare reform as former welfare recipient Bernadine Murphy wipes away her tears in the East Room Thursday, April 18. Also standing by the President are Tiffany Smith and Emory Bent. "(Ms. Murphy) lived in a homeless shelter, too. She also struggled with drug abuse, and her self-esteem was, as she put it, "nonexistent." Bernadine enrolled in a 13-week training program, spent 11 weeks working part-time with a mentor," said the President, explaining that Ms. Murphy now lives in on her own and works at a law firm in Chicago.
