2004 National Endowment for the Humanities

During Mrs. Cheney's visit the National Endowment for the Humanities announced that all D.C. public libraries will receive this year's We the People Bookshelf, a collection of classic books with themes related to American ideas and ideals. Mrs. Cheney, who has spent much of her professional life writing and speaking about the importance of knowing history and teaching it well, helps unveil the National Endowment for the Humanities We the People Bookshelf each year.

As part of the NEH We the People initiative to encourage and strengthen the teaching, study, and understanding of American history and culture, the Endowment annually a new set of books on themes related to American ideas and ideals.

Since 2003, NEH has provided sets of classic books for younger readers (K-12) to 2,000 libraries across the country. With several titles for readers in four different grade ranges, there are 15 books on this year’s We the People Bookshelf.

Mrs. Cheney served as Chairwoman of the National Endowment for the Humanities from 1986 to 1993.
