FBCI Anniversary Visit: Jericho Prisoner Reentry Program

On January 29, 2008, President Bush celebrated the seventh anniversary of the Faith-Based and Community Initiative (FBCI) by touring the Jericho prisoner reentry program in Baltimore. Jericho is a grantee of the Prisoner Re-entry Initiative (PRI), which the President proposed in 2004 as a signature program of the Faith-Based and Community Initiative. FBCI National Summit on Prisoner Reentry Issues, Los Angeles

Last November, the OFBCI hosted the first-ever White House Prisoner Reentry Summit in Los Angeles, CA. White House OFBCI Director Jay Hein and Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao were joined by more than 1,000 individuals from 47 States, including Federal, State and local corrections officials, academics, and nonprofit leaders. Two days of training and workshops centered on replicable models for government partnership with community- and faith-based organizations to reduce crime and break cycles of recidivism. White House Compassion in Action Roundtable Highlights Efforts to Improve Prisoner Reentry Services

On March 22, 2007, the White House Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives hosted a Compassion in Action Roundtable, entitled “Faith and Community-Based Partnerships to Improve Prisoner Reentry Services.” The roundtable assembled leaders from various sectors working to reduce criminal recidivism and its impact on local communities. White House Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives Director Jay Hein Leads Delegation to Africa

The White House Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives (OFBCI) Director Jay Hein led a delegation to Rwanda and Zambia from March 30 to April 5, 2008, hosting White House Conferences to engage government, business, religious and community leaders on ways to further public-private partnerships and health initiatives by joining efforts with local nonprofit organizations. Following President Bush's travels to the region in February, the Conferences and other delegation activities highlighted innovative models that place faith-based and other grassroots organizations at the center of the fight against poverty, disease and other ills in Africa.
