Q: What kinds of work does GAO do?

A: GAO examines the full breadth and scope of federal activities and programs, involving virtually everything that the U.S. Government has done, is doing, or is planning to do. GAO also looks at national and international trends and challenges to anticipate their implications for public policy. GAO

  • Reports on how government programs and policies are working,
  • Audits agency operations and expenditures,
  • Investigates allegations of illegal and improper activities,
  • Issues legal decisions and opinions on such matters as bid protests and reports on agency rules, and
  • Conducts policy related research and analysis.
