Kristen Silverberg -- Department of State
Assistant Secretary, Bureau of International Organization Affairs

Kristen Silverberg was sworn in as Assistant Secretary of State for International Organization Affairs on August 16, 2005. The Bureau of International Organization Affairs is responsible for the development and implementation of U.S. policy in the United Nations, the UN’s technical and specialized agencies, and other international organizations. The Bureau engages in multilateral diplomacy to advance U.S. interests and values in areas as diverse as democracy and human rights, non-proliferation, peacekeeping and security, regional stability, counterterrorism, economic prosperity and development, humanitarian response, social, health, environmental, international crime, and drug issues. Prior to her current assignment, Ms. Silverberg served as the Deputy Assistant to the President and Advisor to the Chief of Staff, where she helped to coordinate the development of Administration policy. Prior to that appointment, she served as the Deputy Assistant to the President for Domestic Policy. Until October 2003, she served as a Senior Advisor to Ambassador L. Paul Bremer in Baghdad, Iraq. Before her service in Iraq, she served as Special Assistant to the President in the White House Office of the Chief of Staff. Before joining the Bush Administration, Ms. Silverberg was a policy advisor on the 2000 presidential campaign in Austin, Texas. She earlier practiced law at Williams and Connelly in Washington, DC. She also served as a law clerk to the Honorable Clarence Thomas, United States Supreme Court, and to the Honorable David Sentelle, United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia. Ms. Silverberg earned her bachelor's degree from Harvard College and her J.D. from the University of Texas.
