Assistant Secretary for Policy

Veronica Vargas Stidvent is the Assistant Secretary for Policy at the U.S. Department of Labor. Assistant Secretary Stidvent was nominated by President George W. Bush and was unanimously confirmed by the full Senate on December 8, 2004. In her capacity as Assistant Secretary for Policy, Ms. Stidvent is responsible for providing advice and counsel to the Secretary of Labor and the Deputy Secretary on the vast array of labor issues that affect the American worker. The Office of the Assistant Secretary for Policy (OASP), which she directs, is responsible for the management and implementation of policy development, regulations, program implementation, compliance assistance strategies, program evaluations, research, budget and performance analysis, and legislation. OASP also provides analytical support to the Secretary, Deputy Secretary, and Policy Planning Board with respect to policy issues and trends that require economic analyses or other expertise. Prior to coming to the U.S. Department of Labor, Assistant Secretary Stidvent served in the White House as Special Assistant to the President for Policy, where she helped develop policy on a wide range of issue areas, including labor, education, justice, and homeland security. Before that, Assistant Secretary Stidvent served in the Bush Administration as Special Assistant to the Administrator in the Office of Management and Budget's Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs. In that position, she provided advice on federal regulatory policy. Earlier in her career, Ms. Stidvent was an associate with the law firm Vinson & Elkins in Austin, Texas. Prior to that position, she served as a law clerk for the Honorable Sidney Fitzwater, U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas. Veronica Vargas Stidvent is originally from El Paso, Texas. She earned her bachelor's degree from the University of Texas at Austin, and her law degree from Yale University. She is married to Chris Stidvent, and they reside in Alexandria, Virginia.
