From 1999 until he assumed his current position, Jay Bybee was a member of the faculty at the William S. Boyd School of Law at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Previously, he was an Assistant Professor of Law at the Paul M. Hebert Law Center at Louisiana State University. Prior to his teaching career, he served at the White House from 1989 to 1991 as Associate Counsel to the President. He also served at the Department of Justice, working first in the Office of Legal Policy and then on the Appellate Staff of the Civil Division. He graduated from Brigham Young University and earned his J.D from the J. Reuben Clark Law School at Brigham Young University.
