Kip Hawley -- Department of Homeland Security |
Assistant Secretary, Transportation Security Administration |
Kip Hawley was sworn-in as Assistant Secretary of Homeland Security for the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) on July 27, 2005. Hawley brings extensive transportation experience in both the private and public sectors, and proven policy leadership to TSA.
Following the events of September 11, 2001, he was called upon to assist with the start-up of TSA, the single largest agency mobilization in recent history. Working for Secretary of Transportation Norman Mineta, Hawley and a handful of private sector executives worked alongside todays Department of Homeland Security Deputy Secretary Michael Jackson and the many outstanding key personnel at the Department of Transportation and other agencies who came together to help stand-up TSA.
Hawley has spent over 20 years in the field of transportation and technology. Recently, Hawley was Executive Vice President of Arzoon, Inc., a supply chain focused software company. From 1995 to 1998, he also served as Chief Executive Officer of Skyway, a leading supply chain services company, whose primary business was delivering solutions to high-tech customers that combined information, technology, and transportation to achieve improved supply chain performance across all modes of transportation. Currently, he sits on the Air Traffic Services Subcommittee of the Federal Aviation Administration.
As Vice President at Union Pacific (UP) Railroad, he was responsible for policy matters as well as Transportation Services, to include a network center and intermodal operations. Hawley subsequently served UP in a reengineering capacity that sought to improve network performance based on customers desire for seamless, reliable end-to-end transportation across all modes and to their partners in the supply chain. He achieved the highest service levels in UP history while exceeding financial goals.
In 1992, Hawley had the honor of serving on the National Commission on Intermodal Transportation, having been appointed by President George H.W. Bush. Earlier in his career, he was Deputy Assistant and Special Assistant to President Ronald Reagan. Hawley also served as Deputy Assistant Secretary and Executive Director of Governmental Affairs for the Department of Transportation. At this time, he was responsible for Secretaries Drew Lewis and Elizabeth Dole for planning and direction of strategies for Departmental legislative proposals and budgets.
Hawley received the degree of J.D. from the University of Virginia Law School, and his B.A. from Brown University. |
