On August 2, 2005, Timothy D. Adams was sworn in by Secretary John W. Snow as Under Secretary for International Affairs at the U.S. Treasury Department. As Under Secretary, he serves as principal advisor to the Secretary of the Treasury on international economic issues. He leads the development and implementation of policies in the areas of international finance, trade in financial services, investment, economic development, international debt, and U.S. participation in the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, and the other multilateral development banks (including the Inter-American Development Bank, the African Development Bank, the Asian Development Bank, and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development). Adams also coordinates financial market policy with the G-7 industrial nations.
Prior to his service as Under Secretary, Mr. Adams was the Policy Director for the Bush-Cheney 2004 Campaign, where he was a senior member of the campaign leadership and directed the policy operations.
From January 2001 to December of 2003, he was the Chief of Staff at the Treasury Department, serving both Secretary Paul H. O’Neill and Secretary John W. Snow. At Treasury, Mr. Adams managed the day-to-day operations of the Department, coordinated policy development and review, and assisted in setting the overall strategic direction of the Department. He was also responsible for advising the Secretary on a wide variety of policy issues as well as on economic and market conditions.
During the 2000 presidential campaign, Mr. Adams was in Austin, Texas as a full-time senior member of the Bush-Cheney campaign policy staff. While in Austin, he worked on a variety of macroeconomic and technology-related issues, directed policy operations for Vice Presidential candidate Cheney, and, later, led the Treasury transition operations for the newly elected Administration.
From early 1993 until March of 2000, Adams held several positions at the G7 Group, which he co-founded and later led as the Managing Director. The G7 Group is a Washington-based consulting firm that forecasts and interprets economic and political events for blue-chip global financial institutions.
From 1989 until 1993, Adams held several policy-related positions in the Administration of President George H. W. Bush. This included stints at the Export-Import Bank, the Treasury Department, and the Office of Management and Budget. Most notably, he served in the White House Office of Policy Development from late-1990 to January 1993, working on a broad range of economic issues.
Adams is a native of Kentucky. He holds an undergraduate and two graduate degrees from the University of Kentucky. He lives in Virginia with his wife and children. |
