Assistant Secretary for Public and Intergovernmental Affairs

Cynthia Renee Church was nominated by President George W. Bush to serve as Assistant Secretary for Public and Intergovernmental Affairs in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) on July 11, 2003, and confirmed by the Senate on January 22, 2004. As Assistant Secretary, Mrs. Church is the senior media adviser to the Secretary of Veterans Affairs. She directs policies governing VA external and internal communications, and oversees the Department’s intergovernmental, homeless veteran and consumer affairs programs. Prior to her nomination, Mrs. Church served as Deputy Press Secretary to Secretary of State Colin L. Powell, a position she held since 2001. A 1983 honors graduate of the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, Mrs. Church began her journalism career as a television news anchor and reporter for Cable 3 News in East Providence, R.I. She joined WVEC-TV, the ABC affiliate in Norfolk, Va., in 1984, where in addition to her anchor duties, she specialized in military and political affairs reporting. In 1996, Mrs. Church formed Capitol Communications, Inc., a media consulting company specializing in public affairs training and crisis communication. Mrs. Church returned to broadcasting in 1999 as a freelance national news correspondent for NBC’s television news stations division based in Washington, D.C.
