Peter B. McCarthy was nominated to be the Assistant Secretary for Management and Chief Financial Officer by President Bush on April 4, 2007, confirmed by the Senate on August 1, 2007, and sworn in on August 3, 2007.
Mr. McCarthy serves as the principal policy adviser to the Secretary of the Treasury and Deputy Secretary of the Treasury on the management of the annual planning and budget process and on matters involving the internal management of the Department and its bureaus. The Assistant Secretary oversees the Department's management programs, which include human resources, information and technology management, emergency preparedness, planning and management analysis, financial management, property management, procurement, and contracting.
Prior to joining the Treasury Department, Mr. McCarthy served from 2002 to 2006 as Deputy Managing Director of the Institute of International Finance (IIF), a global, non-profit association of financial institutions, where he had direct responsibility for multiple departments including Regulatory Affairs and Technology Services. Prior to joining the IIF, Mr. McCarthy served twenty-seven years in the banking industry with First Chicago, Chase Manhattan, and Bank One, including eighteen years in expatriate assignments, most recently serving as Bank Ones senior officer in London. In this capacity, he held responsibilities as Area Head for Europe, Middle East & Africa, and as Chairman of Bank One Capital Markets Limited. During this period, he also served on the Board of Governors of the American Financial Services Association of London. Earlier, Mr. McCarthy served as Bank Ones senior officer in Tokyo, with management responsibilities for branches, offices and subsidiaries throughout the Asia Pacific region. Mr. McCarthys banking experience also includes prior management positions in credit, operations, foreign exchange, and as head of First Chicagos corporate finance and credit training program.
Mr. McCarthy graduated from Cornell University with a BA in Government, and received an MBA in Finance from Southern Methodist University. He has three grown children and lives with his wife Mary in Washington, DC. |
