Vayl Stanley Oxford -- Department of Homeland Security
Director of Domestic Nuclear Detection Office

Reporting directly to Secretary Chertoff, Mr. Vayl Oxford was appointed Director of the Domestic Nuclear Detection Office (DNDO) by the President in December 2006. Mr. Oxford is responsible for DNDO’s jointly staffed office, which serves as the primary entity in the United States Government to improve the Nation’s capability to detect and report unauthorized attempts to import, possess, store, develop, or transport nuclear or radiological material for use against the Nation, and to further enhance this capability over time. Prior to his appointment to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Mr. Oxford served as Director for Counterproliferation (CP) on the White House National Security Council (NSC). His responsibilities included establishing national policy and priorities for CP, which have been codified into the National Strategy for Combating Weapons of Mass Destruction. Before assignment to the White House, Mr. Oxford was Deputy Director for Technology Development at the Defense Threat Reduction Agency, where he was principally involved in the Research and Development vision for future-year programs. From 1993 to 1998, Mr. Oxford worked for the Defense Nuclear Agency and was then Director for Counterproliferation at the Defense Special Weapons Agency. He also served in the United States Air Force in aircraft and weapons development positions; and as Assistant Professor of Aeronautics at the United States Air Force Academy. Mr. Oxford is a graduate of the United States Military Academy and the Air Force Institute of Technology, and the recipient of numerous military awards. He received the Department of Defense Advanced Concept Technology Demonstration Technical Manager of the Year Award in 1997. He was appointed to the Senior Executive Service in 1997 and received the Meritorious Executive Presidential Rank Award in 2002.
