Lauren M. Maddox is the Assistant Secretary for Communications and Outreach at the U.S. Department of Education. Maddox was nominated by President George W. Bush on September 7, 2006 and confirmed by the United States Senate on September 21, 2006.
As Assistant Secretary, Maddox leads the Department's strategies for communicating President Bush's education policies and initiatives and serves as the primary communications advisor to Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings. In addition, Maddox directs all media relations, manages internal and external communications, and oversees outreach efforts to key stakeholders, including state elected officials, school district administrators, business and non-governmental organization leaders, teachers, students, and parents.
Prior to joining the Department, Maddox provided strategic legislative and public relations counsel to a broad range of corporate and non-profit clients at the Washington, DC, public affairs firm PodestaMattoon. Before joining PodestaMattoon, she was a senior communications advisor to the House Majority Leadership, including former Speaker Newt Gingrich and former Republican Conference Chairman J.C. Watts, Jr. Maddox also served as the senior spokesperson and communications strategist for two national health care trade associations.
Maddox earned her bachelor's degree in psychology, with a minor in journalism from Creighton University and received a master's degree in broadcast journalism from Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism. |
