During a brief period from 1992 to 1993, he was special assistant to former NASA Administrator Daniel S. Goldin. In addition, he has held senior positions in the U.S. Department of Commerce, the U.S. Department of Transportation and the White House. In the late 1970s, he was Director of the National Space Institute (now called the National Space Society), founded by space pioneer Wernher von Braun and dedicated to promoting public support for the space program.
