Jeffrey Bergner -- Department of State
Assistant Secretary of State for Legislative Affairs

Dr. Bergner is advisor to the Secretary of State on legislative matters and is the Department’s principal liaison with the Congress. He is responsible for matters relating to the Department’s authorization and appropriations measures, the ratification of treaties, and confirmation of ambassadors and other senior officials of the Department of State. Before joining the Administration, Dr. Bergner was a senior transatlantic fellow with the German Marshall Fund where he specialized in transatlantic issues, the U.S. Congress, U.S. foreign policy, and trade and development issues. Before founding the government relations firm of Bergner, Bockorny, Castagnetti, Hawkins & Brain, Inc., Dr. Bergner served as Staff Director of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee under the Chairmanship of Senator Richard Lugar. He received a B.A. degree from Carleton College, and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in politics and philosophy from Princeton University. He has taught at the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Michigan, and Georgetown University, where he served for twenty years as adjunct professor of Security Studies.
