Assistant Secretary for Administration

Keith Nelson was confirmed as HUD’s Assistant Secretary of Administration on October 7, 2005. Mr. Nelson oversees the Office of Administration as it provides support to the Department in the areas of human resources, training, management and planning, administrative and management services, control and management of correspondence, security and emergency planning, and executive scheduling. Before joining HUD Mr. Nelson worked in the Bush Administration at the Department of Labor (DOL). There, for four years, he served in a variety of capacities. As the Acting Deputy Chief Information Officer from 2003 to 2004, Mr. Nelson was in charge of key department-wide information technology projects and governed DOL’s Information Technology annual budget of $400 million. Most recently, Mr. Nelson served as the Associate Deputy Secretary for Management. He oversaw the management of twenty-three sub-agencies within the Department. During his tenure, the Department of Labor was recognized as best-managed in the Executive branch by the Office of Management and Budget. Prior to Mr. Nelson’s service in the federal government he worked at Dow Jones & Co. as a Business Development Senior Manager. During his three years at Dow Jones, he had the opportunity to develop strategy for Business to Business e-commerce and gain both management and operations skills. Earlier in his career Mr. Nelson worked as a sports journalist for the Dallas Morning News and the Tyler Morning Telegraph. Mr. Nelson earned a bachelors of arts degree in journalism from the University of Texas at Austin. Later he pursued a masters in journalism at University of California Berkeley and an M.B.A. at the University of California Los Angeles’s Anderson School.
