Assistant Secretary for Political-Military Affairs |
John Hillen serves as the Assistant Secretary of State for Political-Military Affairs. The bureau he heads is the principal link between the Departments of State and Defense. The Bureau provides policy direction in the areas of international security, security assistance, military operations, humanitarian assistance, and defense trade.
Prior to his appointment, Dr. Hillen served in the private sector as the President of a subsidiary of a large publicly-held information technology company. He had previously been a senior executive in both public and private technology concerns in the Washington, DC area and New York City. He has served on a number of corporate boards in different industries and is a member of the Young Presidents Organization (YPO).
Earlier in his career, Dr. Hillen held fellowships at several public policy research institutes and served on the bipartisan Hart-Rudman Commission. He is the author or editor of several books on international security and has written numerous articles in leading journals and newspapers. A former Army officer, he served in reconnaissance and airborne units and was decorated for his actions in combat in the 1991 Persian Gulf War.
Dr. Hillen received his BA from Duke University, his MA from Kings College London, his doctorate from Oxford, and an MBA from Cornell University. A former trustee of the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London, he has also served on the boards of The Foreign Policy Research Institute and Philadelphia University. He was for many years a contributing editor to National Review magazine, an ABC News consultant, and is a life member of both the Council on Foreign Relations and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. |
