Keith Gottfried -- Department of Housing and Urban Development
General Counsel

Keith E. Gottfried was unanimously confirmed by the U.S. Senate, on October 7, 2005, as General Counsel for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. As General Counsel, Mr. Gottfried is the Chief Legal Officer for HUD and is the senior legal advisor to the Secretary and other agency Principal Staff providing advice on all aspects of Federal housing and urban development laws, regulations and policies. From 2000 to 2004, Mr. Gottfried served in senior executive positions at Borland Software Corporation, a publicly-held global provider of software development solutions located in Scotts Valley, California. After having represented Borland as its outside counsel, Mr. Gottfried joined the company’s executive management team in June 2000 as Senior Vice President, General Counsel, Chief Legal Officer and Corporate Secretary and was responsible for all aspects of the company’s worldwide legal function. In his last position at Borland prior to departing the company, Mr. Gottfried served as the Senior Vice President-Corporate Affairs and Special Advisor to the CEO and was responsible for enhancing the company’s relationships, domestically and overseas, with industry leaders, potential strategic partners, certain focal sales accounts and domestic and foreign governments. During his tenure at Borland, Mr. Gottfried played a pivotal role in the turnaround of the company and the reinvigoration of the company’s global franchise. Preceding his work at Borland, Mr. Gottfried was a corporate attorney in the New York office of the law firm Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP for close to seven years. While at Skadden Arps, Mr. Gottfried was a member of the firm’s mergers & acquisitions group and represented private and publicly-held U.S. and non-U.S. clients in negotiated transactions. Before joining Skadden Arps, Mr. Gottfried was a corporate attorney in the Philadelphia office of the law firm Blank Rome LLP. While at Blank Rome, Mr. Gottfried was a member of the firm’s corporate practice group and his practice was concentrated in general corporate matters, mergers and acquisitions and securities offerings. Prior to attending law school, Mr. Gottfried, a Certified Public Accountant practiced public accounting with the Philadelphia office of Arthur Young & Company. Mr. Gottfried is admitted to the state bars of California, New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Massachusetts and is admitted to practice before the federal courts located in the Ninth Circuit, the Northern District of California, the Southern District of California, the Eastern District of New York, the Southern District of New York, the Eastern District of Pennsylvania and the District of New Jersey. Mr. Gottfried holds a law degree, cum laude, from Boston University's School of Law where he was a named an Edward F. Hennessey Distinguished Scholar of Law and a G. Joseph Tauro Scholar of Law. Mr. Gottfried also holds an M.B.A., high honors, from Boston University's Graduate School of Management and a Bachelor of Science in Economics from the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School.
