Assistant Attorney General for Legal Policy

Dan Bryant was confirmed as Assistant Attorney General for Legal Policy by the United States Senate on October 3, 2003. In this capacity, Mr. Bryant is responsible for planning, developing and coordinating the implementation of major legal policy initiatives of high priority to the Department and to the Administration. The Office of Legal Policy functions as a focal point for the development and coordination of Departmental policy. The Office also provides legal advice and assistance to the Attorney General and to the Department Components. The Office is also responsible for assisting the Attorney General and the White House in connection with federal judicial nominations and confirmations. From January until June, 2003, Mr. Bryant served as Counselor and Senior Advisor to the Attorney General, advising the Attorney General on legal and policy matters. From February, 2001, until January, 2003, Mr. Bryant served as Assistant Attorney General for Legislative Affairs, having been confirmed by the Senate in May, 2001. As Assistant Attorney General, Mr. Bryant was responsible for devising and implementing Department legislative strategy, articulating the views of the Department on Congressional legislative initiatives and coordinating all Congressional oversight of the Department. From July, 1999 to February, 2001, Mr. Bryant served as Majority Chief Counsel of the House Judiciary Committee's Crime Subcommittee. He had responsibility for the drafting of Federal crime legislation, organizing oversight and legislative hearings, and developing legislative and communications strategies in connection with the national crime agenda. From January, 1995 until July, 1999, Mr. Bryant served as Majority Counsel to the Crime Subcommittee. Previously, Mr. Bryant served in the U.S. Senate on the Government Affairs Committee's Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, focusing on domestic and international organized crime. And from 1987 to 1992, Mr. Bryant served in the U.S. Department of Justice. Mr. Bryant received his bachelor and juris doctor degrees from American University, Washington, D.C., and his master's degree from Oxford University, Oxford, England.
