John W. Jack Nicholson serves as Under Secretary for Memorial Affairs at the Department of Veterans Affairs. As Under Secretary, he directs the National Cemetery Administration, a system of 120 national cemeteries maintained as national shrines. He is also responsible for providing dignified burial services and headstones and markers, issuing Presidential Memorial Certificates to survivors of honorably discharged veterans, and administering federal grant programs to establish state veterans cemeteries. A 30-year Army veteran, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y. He also has a masters degree in public administration. He taught military tactics at West Point, served on both the Army staff and the Joint Chiefs of Staff in the Pentagon, and studied foreign policy as a fellow at the Brookings Institution. His overseas assignments include two and a half years with infantry units in Vietnam and tours of duty in Germany, Lebanon, Switzerland and Korea. He retired from the Army in 1986 with the rank of brigadier general. He has served on the board of directors of several corporations and foundations. He has been active in numerous civic and veterans organizations, and for five years was a director for a youth development program that taught patriotism, leadership and the free enterprise system to teenagers across the United States. |
