As Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Ms. Pearson is the chief communications advisor to Secretary Mike Leavitt and oversees all communications for the Department. She sets communications strategy, coordinates media among the Department's various agencies, and manages the press office, speech and editorial division, web division, and broadcast studio.
Since joining HHS in August 2002, she has served in a variety of public affairs roles across the Department. She has been the Departments spokesperson on issues including increasing access to affordable health insurance, improvements to the Medicare and Medicaid programs, and preparedness for pandemic influenza and emergencies.
Ms. Pearsons career in public service began at the Senate Finance Committee in 1995. She was deputy communications director and worked on issues including the creation of the Roth IRA and SCHIP, welfare reform, HIPAA, and the balanced budget. Ms. Pearson also acted as a spokesperson for a major health care association, and provided strategic communications advice at a Washington, DC-based public affairs firm.
