Appointee Directory View:   Kevin Sullivan -- White House Assistant to the President for Communications Kevin Sullivan was nominated as assistant secretary for communications and outreach at the U.S. Department of Education by President George W. Bush in April 2005. After serving as a communications adviser to Secretary Margaret Spellings beginning in May 2005, Sullivan was confirmed as assistant secretary by the U.S. Senate on July 29, 2005, and sworn in on Aug. 1. Sullivan leads the Department's Office of Communications and Outreach (OCO), created by Spellings to strategically align the Department's communications with its policies, programs, mission and vision. In addition to overseeing media relations and all internal and external communications, OCO is charged with reaching out to the Department's many stakeholders, including state elected officials, school district administrators, business and non-governmental organization leaders and, of course, teachers, students and parents. Prior to his appointment as assistant secretary, Sullivan was senior vice president for corporate communications and media relations for NBC Universal, one of the world's leading media and entertainment companies. Sullivan developed and executed the company's media relations strategy and served as principal corporate media representative and spokesman. From February 2000 to October 2004, Sullivan served as vice president for communications at NBC Sports. In this role, he led NBC's communications efforts for three Olympic Games and for events such as golf's U.S. Open, PGA Tour and Ryder Cup; NASCAR; Wimbledon; Notre Dame football; and horse racing's Triple Crown. Prior to NBC Sports, Sullivan worked for the Dallas Mavericks, where he was regarded as one of the National Basketball Association's (NBA) top public relations executives. With the Dallas Mavericks since the inception of the franchise, Sullivan spent 18 years with the organization, advancing to vice president of communications. Sullivan was honored five times by the media as the outstanding public relations director in the NBA's Western Conference, and received the NBA's Splaver/McHugh Tribute to Excellence Award for 2004 in recognition of his outstanding career performance and service. A native of the Chicago area, Sullivan earned a Bachelor of Science degree in management from Purdue University and a Master of Arts degree in mass communication from Iona College (New York).
