Chief Of Staff

On October 30, 2006 Jeffrey Kupfer was named Chief of Staff at the United States Department of Energy. As Chief of Staff, Mr. Kupfer assists in managing the day to day operations of the Department of Energy, a $23 billion agency. He also runs the day to day operations of the Office of the Secretary. Before his appointment as Chief of Staff, Mr. Kupfer served for nearly a year as a Special Assistant to the President for Economic Policy at the White House. Prior to this position, Mr. Kupfer was the Executive Director of the President’s Advisory Panel on Federal Tax Reform. From 2001 through 2005, Mr. Kupfer worked at the Department of the Treasury, where he was Deputy Chief of Staff and Executive Secretary. In 2003, Mr. Kupfer handled a temporary assignment as a Special Assistant to President Bush’s Chief of Staff. Mr. Kupfer was previously a tax counsel for the U.S. Senate Finance Committee; a counsel for the U.S. Senate Committee on Governmental Affairs; and a trial attorney in the U.S. Department of Justice’s Tax Division. Mr. Kupfer also clerked for Chief Judge Thomas P. Griesa in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. A native of Pittsburgh, PA, Mr. Kupfer graduated from Yale College and Harvard Law School. He and his wife, Shelly, live in Maryland with their three children.
