Assistant Secretary of State (Near Eastern Affairs)

C. David Welch serves as Assistant Secretary of State (Near Eastern Affairs). A career Foreign Service Officer, he previously served as U.S. Ambassador to the Arab Republic of Egypt. Prior to this appointment, Ambassador Welch served as Assistant Secretary of State for International Organization Affairs. He previously served as Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs. Earlier in his career, Ambassador Welch served as the Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. He earned his bachelor's degree from the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service and his master's degree from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy.
