Important Afghan Mosque Restored
Fact of the Day
The Mullah Mahmud Mosque in Afghanistan, a rare example of late Mughal vernacular architecture, is being restored. The 17th century mosque was damaged by fighting between rival militias from 1992 to 1996, but it is being repaired. The American Ambassador's Fund for Cultural Preservation is providing money to help with restoration, painting, and conservation of plastering. The Ambassador's Fund provides direct small grant support for heritage preservation in less developed countries.
