U.S. Helps Caribbean Countries Hit Hardest by Hurricanes
Fact of the Day
The United States is launching a $100 million hurricane-recovery program to help the nations of the Caribbean hit hardest by Hurricanes Charley, Frances, Ivan, and Jeanne. Grenada, Haiti, and Jamaica are the countries in the greatest need. Grenada will receive $42 million, Haiti $38 million, and Jamaica $18 million. The remaining $2 million will be used to develop and carry out recovery projects in other affected countries. The $100 million is in addition to an initial disaster assistance of $19.4 million, as well as substantial relief efforts undertaken in Florida and other areas of the United States that were devastated by this year's hurricanes.
